Can Blepharoplasty Get Rid of Tired Eyes?

Our eyes can be an important part of how we connect with other people, but sometimes they can also negatively impact the impression we give off. Thick, drooping upper eyelids and dark, puffy circles under the eyes can result in a tired or sad appearance, even when we are at our happiest and most energetic. Sagging lids can also contribute to the physical signs of aging, and some people even experience obstructed vision due to excess skin and fat deposits around the eyes. If you would like to refresh the appearance of your eyes, our board-certified plastic surgeon, Geoffrey Leber, MD, FACS, may be able to help. Using a procedure called blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid lift surgery, Dr. Leber can tighten, smooth, and firm your upper and/or lower eyelids, resulting in a more youthful and alert look.

Upper blepharoplasty is performed on the upper eyelid, and designed to mitigate the “hooded” look that often accompanies excess eyelid skin. This procedure may also help reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and wrinkles, as it removes the excess skin and fatty build ups around the eyes in order to produce a taut, smooth look. In some cases, upper blepharoplasty can help certain patients regain a wider field of vision by reducing obstructive drooping skin.

Lower blepharoplasty can help smooth the contour under the eye and reduce the appearance of dark shadows, puffiness, under-eye bags, and skin sagging. Dr. Leber’s unique method of lower eyelid rejuvenation aims to remove excess fat and skin while also using facial fat grafting in order to help patients maintain facial volume, which can provide a look of youthful fullness. Since Dr. Leber’s methods do not disturb the orbital fat pocket, his patients often notice less scarring than those who undergo the same procedure using more traditional methods.

In some cases, patients may wish to refresh both their lower and upper eyelids. Dr. Leber will go over your options for facial rejuvenation during your initial consultation in order to determine the right treatment for your cosmetic goals.
